DAN STAVELY AWARD

Every year we like to take a moment and recognize a coach in Northern Colorado who has the mission to make disciples. It is an honorable award that we give out to one coach per year that exemplifies the same standards that Coach Dan Stavely lived out.

Find out more about Dan Stavely and the legacy he left.

A Lifetime of Discipleship

Known for his roles as a dynamic mentor and devoted athletic administrator, Dan Stavely joined FCA in 1958 and worked part-time for the ministry in Colorado. In 1980, he became an FCA Regional Volunteer Representative and served a 14-state region. Stavely’s athletic career reached its pinnacle at the University of Denver where he played football and won a national championship in wrestling. He then embarked on a 50-year coaching career that included stints at Eastern Washington, Washington State, Stanford, and his alma mater. Stavely spent 18 years at the University of Colorado, where he served as the freshman football coach along with his duties as athletic academic advisor and associate

athletic director.

Early in his career, Stavely served four years in the Air Force. Some of his most notable honors include being named the 1975 FCA National Coach of the Year, his 1977 induction into the Colorado Coaches Hall of Fame, and his 1988 induction into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame. Coach Stavely was inducted into the FCA Hall of Champions in 1991. As impressive as these accomplishments are “Coach” has made his mark on a different, but very critical level. He has touched and positively influenced the lives of thousands of young men as an assistant college football coach through five decades in Colorado.

Typical of the regard in which he is held by his peers, are these thoughts: Coach Fisher DeBerry of Air Force Academy: “He has been the ideal role model for so many people."Dudley “Bo” Mitchell, former CU athlete and FCA leader: “Dan Stavely has done more for the University of Colorado than any other individual involved in the school’s athletic department. He made a choice to remain an assistant to stay closer to the players. He was, and is, like a father to literally thousands of athletes who have come through the CU program.”

Fred Casotti, from his book Football CU Style: “Dan Stavely is a devoted working man’s Christian who applies Christian principles to everything he does. Dan Stavely isn’t an angel. He can get down in the pits and drive a team to excellence as good and tough as any coach…He enjoys an earthy story as well as the next man…When I call Dan Stavely a working man’s Christian, I mean it as the highest compliment I can give him.”
